Nope. They’ve existed for awhile. I don’t know why they haven’t seen wider use, but my best guess is larger file sizes and the work to create them.
Over 8 Megabytes for just that one image. That is bold.
Exactly this. I tried using a gif banner but the compression I had to use to get it to the allowed file size was so awful that it wasn’t worth it.
