Age Verification Coming Soon to a NSFW creator near you

Watch the video here

So Mastercard is requiring Patreon creators to do age verification. I think this begins in October. I do understand the reasoning (to some extent but the motive behind it is still murky) however I am 100% against this mostly because I heard it will be done by a third-party company. That third party will (or MIGHT) HOLD ON TO YOUR ID. They don’t delete it. They keep that shit. It will forever live in their database. Waiting to get stolen by a hacker.

If there is one thing we truly know it’s that nothing is safe. Hospitals and even a pipeline were attacked by hackers. WHAT makes you think that this 3rd party company won’t get hacked too? It’s all only a matter of time.

Edit: I finally had time to watch it and got my question answered so I’m glad it won’t affect me…for now. But if they were to require artists to participate i think an ID verification like the one below SHOULD suffice since we do NOT involve living breathing 3D touchable real people. Only characters from our imagination.

It’s all part of the campaign by banks, credit card companies, and payment processors to censor anything they don’t like (usually at the behest of some politician). In the US, it’s a way around the First Amendment limits on what the government may restrict with regard to speech/publication. The courts won’t let them ban pornography or erotica, so they’ve decided it’s ALL about trafficking minors, and use that lie to convince the public that censorship is a good thing.

They intend to use Stripe. Really wish staff bothered to reply to the forums here with more information instead of just the Discord. But it was confirmed there that they will be using Stripe as their third party for the IDs. And it will start Oct 15th.

Still no response that I could see as to why they need the IDs stored indefinitely.

Pretty sure that might be required by either FOSTA or SESTA (US laws designed to ban sex from the internet in the guise of fighting sex trafficking.

I figure there’s some sort of reason. Just wish they would say instead of us guessing.

Hi folks. The creator of this thread has asked that it be deleted, however I’m concerned that doing so may pose some questions and appear like Patreon staff deleted the thread to silence conversation, which of course is not the case.

So instead of deleting the thread, I will close it. OP can DM me if they’d still like to discuss removing the thread entirely and we can come up with the best solution together.

I also encourage creators to check out Patreon’s latest blog from the Policy Team detailing the results of their Creator Policy Engagement Program for Q4 of 2021:
