I wonder if Patreon has considered allowing us to offer yearly memberships at a discounted rate. This seems like a great possibility for patron retention.

It would also reduce overall transactions fees, which is a good thing all around (because of the fixed-fee portion of the credit card charges).

It’s been suggested a few times yeah. If memory serves, it is on their roadmap in some form i think. There are some other topics here with these questions in them that might give some insight to your question.

Yearly billing is a good idea, especially from the perspective that it could greatly decrease the number of declines.

Chiming in to say we would love this feature too!
I believe that allowing users to pledge yearly for a slight discount (example: $10/month or $100/year) would be a true game-changer in terms of patron retention.

My fans don’t even care about a discount, they just want to be ensured that their transaction goes through! Each month 10% of my patrons don’t go through and it’s a huge hassle for all. It could easily just be an extra perk for signing up for a year and getting a PIN or something as a thanks.

Yearly pledging would be great as long as creators can still choose to get those funds doled out monthly instead of all at once. (I work better with things being split up monthly than getting a yearly lump sum from someone.)
Though my question would be, how would patreon handle if the person wanted to upgrade their pledge part way through the year they already paid. That’s where I see things getting a little complicated but I wouldn’t want people locked in to a tier when I know
lots of folks run special offers and custom content that someone might want for a single month of the year. They would need to pay the difference so making that work could be a little complicated. But I’d like to see it happen.

Can you pick the percentage off or the number of free months, or is that decided by Patreon?

At least in the BETA version, the percentage and 12 month payent is decided by Patreon.
