Welcome! Please Introduce Yourself!

Howdy!

I’m Colin Wright.

I’ve traveled around the world full-time since 2009, I run a blog called Exile Lifestyle, have written a few dozen books (fiction & nonfiction), speak to crowds internationally (I’m currently on a speaking tour around North America), and I produce a weekly news analysis podcast called Let’s Know Things.

I’m in the process of fleshing out my Patreon offerings (particularly for the podcast), and am keen to connect with folks in various creative/making-of-things fields while also gleaning some insight as to how I might increase my Patreon presence without overextending myself.

And a side-note: I’m happy to share what I can with others in this group who’re hoping to make a living from things I’ve done professionally thus far (authoring/publishing, speaking, podcasting, traveling, and I ran a branding studio in LA in a past life). I’m an absolute newbie in the Patreon space, but I may be able to tell you some things about other aspects of these professions. Feel free to drop me a line if you’ve got any questions I might be able to answer

Twitter & Instagram, if that’s your jam.

My name’s Steve Conley and I’m a cartoonist creating the webcomic The Middle Age. It’s a silly, fantasy story about a middle-aged knight who is stuck with a sarcastic and cursed magic sword.

I’ve been very fortunate with Kickstarter support but it hasn’t quite translated to Patreon support yet so I’m excited to see what I can do during this special offer campaign to increase patronage. I have a lot to learn from all of you!

hi all

i’m Ed from Finland.

i do high level clash of clans strategy videos n base designs. clash is a mobile strategy game.
was ranked global #1 in clash twice, which is the source of my knowledge that i share.
i have a youtube following of 97k n 40k on instagram. started yt bit over 4 years ago.
started patreon bit over 2 years ago, that ended up changing my whole life. loved doing videos on youtube.
was amazed few people immediately joined up to patreon. from that moment on spent loads n loads of time figuring out the correct tiers + content in them. i still spend a lot of time on tiers n improving the content within them.

looking forward meeting creators around the world n sharing experiences.
since as many of us know creating is a very lonely profession n rarely ur friends or even family
have any clue of our work that is our life.

besides clash i write modern poetry in english. just last week published my second book in english.
for now i have few hundred readers in about 15 countries. but i’ve been focusing more on writing than exposure. also since i want to control all from writing n hiring my own editors to work with me n photographers for the covers to the printing process and i want to also print small collectors editions with very high quality.
i write two books a year, since only way to become better is do books n 2 is better than 1.
going to launch a own patreon for my poetry endeavours this month. exciting times.

i saw there r few authors here if anyone wants to swap books i’m game. just hit me up with an email.

i love patreon and the wonderful people who created it. absolutely amazing.
in the future u will be noticed in history for giving freedom to create for a generation of creative people.

excited about the new campaign feature.
going to start doing podcasts too (or EdCasts as i call em) n interact more with my audience.
as funny as it might sound i’m now focusing on my lower tiers that i see a gateway to the higher ones for new people.

but most of all i’m excited in meeting and interacting with creators.

Hi all!

My name is Tansy Rayner Roberts. I’m a writer, podcaster and occasional artist based in Tasmania, Australia.

I started my Patreon a few years ago to fund a novel I was writing and publishing as a serial, Musketeer Space (gender-swapped space opera retelling of The Three Musketeers). When I wrapped that up by publishing the book, I made a transition with my page to new ongoing serial fiction project, my podcast Sheep Might Fly.

(I read new and previously published stories and novellas, in episodic form, and while the podcast itself is free for anyone to listen to, my supporters get the bonus ebooks at the end and a lot of other extras)

I’ve been moving towards more and more Patreon-exclusive content over the last year or two, including essays and stories. I started a new serialised novel last month – I wish I’d held off and used THAT as my special offer! If anything I worry that I’m already putting so much out there that my Patreon page gets muddled and confusing.

Anyway I just got over the $400 mark with 124 patrons. I’d love to bring in a more substantial income from this as it takes a big slice out of my working time as a writer.

I’ve been building a lovely community with many of my supporters, thanks largely to a discussion Slack that I set up with friends for listeners & Patreon supporters of our various podcasts, and have already set up a poll to ask for their input about what my Special Offer should be. Because I’m already close to my limit of work I can produce for the Patreon (and I’m very hesitant to produce work that has more than a year’s exclusivity because… it’s still only 100+ subscribers), I was thinking some kind of live event, either an exclusive podcast episode, a video or live stream (ugh, I rarely do these) or a one-off taster of my next milestone goal, which is a Book Club event.

Cheers,
Tansy

Hi everyone! My name is Nikita.

I write a fun weekly newsletter about corporate social responsibility called Above the Bottom Line, and I’m aiming to launch a podcast this winter. I’m coming up on my 1 year anniversary on Patreon in October, and I’ve been racking my brain for a way to increase my number of patrons - which has slooooowly dwindled over the past few months. I love doing this as a passion project, but it’s really important to me that it’s financially sustainable - both from a time and expense perspective.

All that to say, this Special Offers program is such perfect timing! And I would love to hit 250 patrons as a result of this!

Thanks for adding me to the community and sending me the content I missed out on. I’m already getting so much value from the discussions!

Hello, everyone!

I’m Virginia Greene, and I am a nature illustrator, graphic novelist, and writer.
I write and illustrate a short story series called The Ballads of Remex, about songbirds and their various adventures and cultures in the Appalachian mountains. My stories are a mix of actual bird behavior/biology (as I was a biologist for a long time before switching to full-time art!) and fantasy–leaning more on the fantasy side, but I do make sure the stories at least point to real birds! I write these stories to help people learn about birds, but moreso, help people learn to care about birds–since humans will only work to protect that which they care about. I got started on this project in earnest for Inktober 2016, and have been working on it off-and-on ever since.

I started Patreon a few years ago to support this and other personal projects. This year, I went full-time self-employed as an artist, and have “made it”, in that I can pay all of my bills every month, but I have unfortunately been consumed by client work, and have lost sight of why I wanted to be a creative professional in the first place. My Patreon has become less focused as a result, encompassing all of my art rather than the bird stories specifically. When I heard about this Special Offer opportunity around the same time I started seriously planning for this year’s Inktober, I knew I wanted to be involved! I want this Special Offer program to help me reach new folks, and hopefully inspire old fans to up their patronage levels, and help me prioritize the time I spend on the work that inspires me. I want working on the Ballads of Remex to be a financially viable use of my time!

I have hovered around $300/month and for approximately a year. I currently have $1, $5, $10, $20, and $50 levels. I send out a weekly e-mail to all Patrons featuring Patron-only art, early looks at things, and personal reflection on The Artist’s Journey. There is little difference between $1 and $5, unfortunately, and I would like to work on that. I send postcards featuring original art to Patrons at the $10 and higher level. Here’s the link to my Patreon, in case you want to know more:

For my Special Offer, I would like to reward my current Patrons at the $5 level and above, and entice new ones, by sending them a small printed “zine” of a few past Ballads of Remex stories, in order to hype for this year’s Inktober. I would love suggestions and feedback from folks who have experience with this sort of thing, and also fellow artists/creatives! Looking forward to getting to know you guys.

Thank you, Patreon, for all y’all do–I wouldn’t have made it at the beginning of this year, client-less and terrified, without income from your platform! <3

I feel this so much, especially the unfocused-ness and “posting into the void”! Good luck–I hope we both learn a lot from this.

Oooh Bird illustrations!
I shall follow you on Patreon and hopefully we both have good outcomes with this special offer. I love your Kakapo-bear creature on your first page.

I love the “Inky Valkyrie” title. I can imagine six different ways to illustrate it already…
Perhaps I could do something collaborative with you during Inktober? I’ve popped over to your Patreon and commented there  It’s lovely to see another Australian over here - we are awake and posting while the other side of the world sleeps.

Ha yes we are living in everyone else’s future. The idea of an Inktober collab is really exciting. Email me on tansyrr@gmail.com and we can chat more – I’ll be out most of today but around on the weekend to brainstorm.

Hello hello!
My name is Rebecca Loebe, I’m a touring singer/songwriter based in Austin, TX.
I use my Patreon to connect with fans, share new videos/songs/essays and help bolster my monthly income. The goal is to earn enough from Patreon that I can make fewer financially-motivated decisions and focus on creating and performing my best music.

I’m launching my special offer on Monday, and doing a bit of catch-up this weekend to make sure I’m ready.

I’m a little nervous because I actually ran a sorta-special-offer all summer, before I knew I’d be invited to this workshop. I made a big push to get to 300 patrons by August 17th (my birthday/Patreon anniversary). I made it halfway there - from 205 to 255 - but as I’m working through the handbook I see that I did a LOT of the wrong things (dragged it on too long, used kinda desperate language, etc). It’s been almost a month since I stopped mentioning that push, and I think I can resume without bugging people…

If anyone has any advice for how to sorta re-launch/re-fresh my special offer effort I’d be hugely appreciative. I’ve had so much fun checking out your pages! Looking forward to diving into this together

Hi all. I’m way late to the party but catching up is giving me a buzz. I love hearing what other creators are doing, and sharing learning both ways, hopefully.

I’m John Mierau (rhymes with ‘Hero!’). I’m an author, narrator, storyteller of speculative fiction. I also hosted and produced Patreon’s own creator interview podcast, but I’ve stopped working for others and only podcast my own published and patron-exclusive fiction.

I write a variety of space opera in a variety of story-verses. I’ve just finished a marathon of a 130K novel for new subscribers: FARLOST: ARRIVAL, prior to launching the title in audible.

You can check out my patreon page or my site ServingWorlds.com for my scifi and audiobooks. I always give complete stories free as podcasts to intrigue new ears. Some say I give away too much for free, but I’m always creating more! (grin)

I’m excited by the focus on special offers, love the concept of a ‘what happened this year’ calendar graphic espeically so far, and looking forward to getting up to speed for a Hallowe’en era launch.

Here’s the advice I always try to follow when hitting a deadline, maybe it’ll work for you creating your special offer!:

Drink lots (of water!), don’t skimp on sleep, and go for a walk or something when you’re ready to lose your mind on this project. I often come back with something new to try!

Nice to meet you. Have fun, all!

I’m really late to the party here because some scheduling issues came up and I’m not able to do the special offer promotion this month, but I did get my plans together and I am watching what everyone else is doing! (I plan on trying the idea later this fall, it’s a classic and should work great!)

For the record, my name is Brian James Freeman and I use Patreon as a way to support my short story writing habit. With the help of approximately 120 patrons over the year last year, Patreon has completely changed the way I approach my work. Having their support each month has allowed me to focus on what I really wanted to write this year instead of doing lots of “side” projects here and there to pay the bills.

I will definitely be doing a “special offer” push later this year to see if I can increase my number of supporters even further.

Brian
