Hey gang I wanna post regularly to my Patreon feed, because it’s a good look and also a nice kind of diary - but i don’t want my patrons to get swamped with emails letting them know every single time i post even a minor update. I feel like some people will cancel their support if they receive more than say one update email a month. I do a monthly digest that i’d like everyone to receive, but i’d also like to pop out smaller bursts every now and then, without them getting spammed, hahaha. i know that individuals can update their email subscription settings one by one, but that is fiddley and people are unlikely to do it - so my question is, at our end, is there any way to stop email notifications being sent out every single time we make a new post / update?
cheers!
sam
Currently there isn’t a way, patrons have to do it themselves if they don’t want to receive emails (which is a simple affair, not so fiddly). I admit I’m also a bit paranoid about spamming people, but I’m not sure I would use such a feature if it were available. If those patrons who expect to receive email updates don’t receive them, or are missing some, it would be too weird and confusing. I prefer to let them be in control of that preference.
One email update a month? I feel badly if I don’t post an update every day!
I think those patrons who feel like you’re posting too often will simply shut off their notifications, and check in whenever they visit the site—which is exactly what I do with the people I’m following.
I just give fair warning to my patrons to be on my description that I will post MAX 3 times a day and minimum 3 times a week. I used to post more than 3 times a day but it is unnecessary now that we can easily post with images within the post. If people don’t want to get updates all the time they can just change their settings. You could also do a poll with your patrons to see how often they like posts and if every day is too much?
As other’s have posted, there isn’t a way to do this. However, i post frequently. Sometimes multiple times a day on busy days and I haven’t lost a patron to that yet (that i’m aware of.) All of my patrons seem to like the fact that i post content often and keep them up to date, show behind the scenes processes and more. So i guess it really depends on what your smaller updates are all about and weather its related to your overall scope and weather it is interesting to your user base.
Don’t ever be afraid to start a poll and ask for direct feedback from your patrons. Involve them and hear them. You usually get better results overall if you ask them what they want.
Have you considered a separate blog for your diary stuff? Put the cartoons (what people are actually supporting you for) in the Patreon, and link to that when you make a post.
(Just to put in my 2 cents, a lot of patrons actually enjoy behind the scenes/personal stuff. It is why i suggest they take a poll with their supporters to see what they want. I have found that personal posts bring you closer to your patrons in the sense that they can see you are a real person and not a ‘creative machine’ as some seem to think. You become more relatable to your supporters and often times people feel more invested this way. Not everyone of course, but many i’ve encountered on various platforms.)
