What's your biggest Patreon pain point?

I don’t know how to link threads yet, but maybe I figure it out I can add it later. I’ve been using Patreon since January 2015, I think, and I am a NSFW/adult creator (art nude and lingerie content with a relaxation/positivity element, mostly self shot).

1. I feel hidden away (low visibility for NSFW creators) and fear one day losing my Patreon altogether because I do nude work. I also feel there have been transparency issues to adult creators at times regarding changes. When I first started Patreon I was so excited because as a sensual (not sexual/porn/explicit) creator I finally found a place where I felt welcome, I was treated as an artist, not a commodity like many other adult sites, and I wasn’t “competing” with porn. I did have concerns about not being found in search on the site which has been a bigger issue than I anticipated, but I got around that as best I could by making sure I shared my link often.

I understand payment processors are the root of it, but when a lot of my model creator friends were being shut down, I was scared to death and actually physically sick from the stress. This has become an important source of income and ideally I’d have other options in place just in case, but they don’t exist. I still worry that I’m being pulled into a false sense of security and one day it will all be jerked out from under me because my content includes nudity.

Side Note: I do understand that unfortunately some of my model friends were posting content that was against the TOS and that was rightfully flagged and rules enforced. I always wondered how long they would be able to do that before it was “caught” and it was disheartening to see more explicit content like you’d find on a traditional adult/porn site here too because that was what I was trying to stay away from.

Anyway, this is my biggest worry and I could go on about it even more, but I’m sure you get it. Unfortunately, I don’t see too many other adult creators in this community so far, but I can assure you it’s a widespread concern among us.

2. We don’t have a way to offer galleries. As a creator who offers mostly sets of images and videos, I have to host all of my content elsewhere. It’s a security issue and it makes Patrons have to do more clicks. Plus it creates more points for issues. I know video hosting is a bigger issue, but photo galleries would be fantastic! That’s been on my wishlist since day one and it’s a complaint I here a lot when mentoring others on starting or improving their Patreon’s.

3. Notifications, as in the notifications page/screen. I’m echoing this as I’ve seen others say it, but I really wish we’d see notifications chronologically. I try to respond to every comment, but it’s difficult as I’m mainly on my phone using the app and if someone comments on an older post it’s difficult to track down at times.

I hope I did this right and I’m really grateful for a place to mention these things and feel they’ll actually be considered.

  1. Users frequently encounter problems with the podcast player. Shutting off after playing only one minute, no option to automatically listen to next episode when one is over.

  2. Different options on app from website. For example, the podcast RSS feed is available on the Overview section when users log in on the website, but it the RSS feed is not available there on the app.

Lenses are causing us to lose patrons. We’ve done a lot of research into it and each time we post a lens we are almost guaranteed to lose 1 or 2 patrons. It’s happens every time so we’ve had to stop using this feature, :pensive: even though some of our Patrons are requesting us to post more.

Our theory is that “stories” are a great on other platform like Instagram because the users are already there on the app consuming lots of other content.

On Patreon, many people are coming to the platform when they receive a notification email for the new lens, and the value the get from logging into Patreon is only a 15 second clip??!? They get frustrated, and decide to cancel their pledges.

The same story posted on YT, IG, FB performs great, but on Patreon we’ve seen this behavior consistently.

This is a real problem, and we’d advise anyone using lenses to be aware of this.

Suggested solution - Allow creators to provide more value by posting longer lens clips (at least 2 minutes). It would also be useful if the lenses didn’t disappear after 24 hours. No need to follow Snapchat down the drain!

Also allowing us to pin highlight Lenses on the profile page would be a great conversion tool

Keep up the great work amigos!

I’d like to add one more “Pain Point”

Not being able to see message history is really bad. Membership platforms are all about relationships. I don’t know I’ve already said something to a particular person and end up pasting the exact same “standard Response” to them - it’s embarrassing and sure-fire way to remove the exact ‘personal touch’ that I’m aiming to give on Patreon.

Thank you so much for both pieces of feedback, @kombilife. The current messaging service is something we know is not serving our creators as much as we want it to and is something we’re thinking about in 2019. Your thoughts around Lens are really interesting and I’ve passed that to our product team as suggestions. Thanks again!

The payments system, and lack of information around the current issues. As creators, the funds come in because of our presence here, so it seems reasonable to inform creators a little more fully what the issues are and how they are to be resolved now and in the future.

I’m also concerned that there may be a security breach of the payments system?

I will keep mine very simple

  1. Searchable posts & also a search facility for key words on the site. Sadly I know that at the last Hangtime, despite many creators asking repeatedly month on month for a searchable post facility he admitted in January that this was not the priority he had given his team. They are focusing on things like merchandise add ons etc. This has cost me an estimated loss of 50 plus patrons & about £2k in revenue to date. I have now had to pay a further £1.5k to have a custom website built to enable links & shortcuts to work for my patrons.

  2. Pinned posts - Again, a feature request I made at a Hangtime which was picked up & was supposedly being actioned but nothing ever happened. It is SO frustrating that an important announcement that affects every new member joining in a month for example, disappears down the infinite list of posts. Jack’s suggestion to keep updating the same post & reposting it on a weekly basis would not amuse my patrons. It seems a pretty basic ask :frowning:

  3. After the Hangtimes we would love to see a roadmap of suggestions rejected (and why), those that need more input & those that have been taken on & what stage they are at ahead of being implemented. Sometimes I think we repeat ourselves over & over & all we see are tonnes of new integrations & apps being added (most of which I will never use) yet the basics are being ignored, to our cost. Again, this is a repeat of something that is asked for regularly in the Hangtimes. I love thise sessions but am beginning to feel we are ignored. Patreon is now my main income & I have taken a huge risk basing almost all of my business on there & after some of the recent happenings I am starting to get worried about things :frowning:

Lol, that did not turn out as simple as I had planned! Sorry!

I too am worried about this. I am still missing several hundred $ & would like a better explanation of what is happening.

Totally agree with you on this! After being convinced at Hangtime that patrons wanted Lens clips, I tried it. My patrons were furious as they did not have a clue what was happening. It was even worseif I posted a quick photo as they thought it was a broken video link. A 2 minute or even a minute one would be so much better.

For me, a few current pain points that I haven’t yet seen addressed:

  1. Likes. When someone likes/hearts a Patreon post or comment, I want who liked it to be visible (like here on this Discourse forum!). In particular, I want my patrons to know that I, myself, hearted their comment so they know that I read it.

  2. The Pop-Up Profile box. While I like having an easy way to know how someone who left a comment has supported me, that box always jumps in the way whenever I try to respond to a comment. Which often then clicks me over to that patron’s direct profile page. Which, since Patreon uses infinite scrolling in its posts, means I lose my place on my Posts page and have to scroll all the way back down to the comments I was working my way through. Again and again. (I’ve taken to always opening my posts in new tabs individually to combat this.)

  3. Emails based on tags This feels like a heavier ask, but it would be great if my patrons had finer control over what emails they receive from my Patreon page. Right now, it’s all or nothing. But ideally, they’d be able to pick and choose which ones they get. Being able to subscribe (and unsubscribe) by tags seems like a way to make this happen.

My 2 cents.

@alex I can especially agree on your point about likes! I think at least the Creator and the person who made the comment should be able to see who liked it. I’m not sure if there’s a privacy concern beyond that, particularly for locked posts though. As in I think with locked posts you (as in any random person, pledged or not) can see there are likes, but I don’t think it would be wise to show the public who liked it as that might indicate their pledge amount and that might get tricky. Hopefully that makes sense, but overall, yes I love that likes viewing suggestion!

I use locked posts as an upsale. Almost all of my patrons come in at the $10 level and upgrade through my tiers.
It’s not uncommon for me to see “So and so pledged $10. So and so upgraded their pledge to $20. So and so upgraded their pledge to $50.” emails come in very quickly. locked posts do that for me.

  1. App matching the website ( specially Patron Manager and Benefits available ).
When I only have access to Patreon to my phone, I can’t check out patrons info in the app in order to send rewards.
    Threads:
    Patreon App Suggestions
    Patreon App Posting Limitations
    Improvements for the Patreon App

  2. Mennu or better category links.
If it is sometimes already hard for me to find some specific content I posted, I can’t imagine for my new patrons.
    Threads:
    Menu or better category links

  3. Statistics for posts.
Would be really great to have access to this kind of data in depth for all posts and not only for the last 15.
    Statistics for Posts!

I’ve got some separate pain points to bring up.

  1. Lifetime Pledge Length: It doesn’t seem like there’s any way for me to access the cumulative length of a patron’s pledge. I want to offer lifetime rewards to any patron who has pledged for a year or longer, and I’d like to be able to offer it to folks with non-consecutive pledge months.
For example: I have a supporter who’s given me well over $2k in support over the years, but he had to take a break last year due to financial difficulties. Now that he’s back, however, his popup says “Your patron for 3 months.”
Even if it’s just in a CSV export, I’d like to be able to see full cumulative months SOMEWHERE. I don’t want to have to go through all 4 years of records to manually count up how long someone has pledged.
  2. No Surveys: I would like to be able to set up an entry survey per tier. At the very least, I want to be able to ask patrons how they’d like to be thanked on my website without having to funnel them away to a completely separate survey site.
I’ve had to put together countless external surveys over the years to get the information I need to fulfill my patrons’ rewards, and the hardest part is actually getting folks to notice they need to fill them out. Having these surveys be a part of the onboarding process would be a godsend. Plus, it wouldn’t send them away from my Patreon, which is a bonus.
Examples of surveys I’ve put together over the years: Information for comic cameos, sketch commissions, and as I said, how they want to be thanked on my website.
  3. Static Pages: This is a BIG one for me. I want to be able to have a handful of static “information” pages that are easily and automatically accessible from my front page. I have some resource pages for patrons, and also tier-locked links that I need to be able to offer for rewards. Right now, I have to make separate posts and make sure all the links are in the right places. But this also means that when they’re posted, they spam my patrons’ email, and then I always have to fish for the links when I need them.
I would much rather be able to have a place to point to on my front page – another tab, maybe – that has all the resources they need and the ability to get only what they’re approved for.

Other pain points that I’ve voted for but want to reiterate my support: galleries of images, especially navigable ones; and the ability to early access posts for other tiers. If I have something going up for $10 patrons as soon as its made, and the same thing going up on a slower weekly schedule for $1 patrons, I don’t want to make duplicate posts. I can’t tell you how many complaints I’ve had about how confusing it is to see the same comic page posted multiple times. And finally, case-sensitive tags are driving me nuts. It shouldn’t categorize Comic and comic differently.

Overall, I love Patreon and you guys have really smoothed out a lot of the bumpy experiences, but these are definitely things that consistently grate on me. Thanks!

There are very few things that bug me about Patreon but the one thing I can’t get over is how the camera ‘insert image’ button disappears after writing a paragraph or so of text into your post before you publish it. I’ve gotten used to loading up the images first but more often than not I end up thinking that I should insert an image somewhere along the way and I can’t because the camera icon has vanished. Which means I have to cut all the text off onto the clipboard, throw in my images, then try and paste it back again and it -always- loses the formatting.

Platform stability and sustainability.

These two factors have me building an alternative platform for my patrons, via my website.

Patreon is the most buggy, unstable platform I use. Bearing in mind that it feeds and houses me, that’s too many eggs in one basket.

I dont want to leave, but I am expanding my reach onto other platforms.

Plus, hearing today that the issues with payments processing is still not resolved, despite the downtime with the servers.

I really don’t wish to complain, but I am generally concerned about this, and feel I owe it to my patrons to ask for a better platform here. Not new features, in fact, I would prefer less features, and have you focus fully on getting the payments processing working well, along with some of the other buggy issues such as stability and sustainability.

Then you have a product. Then we have a platform.

I’m starting to feel like a beta tester.

I just wanted to say thanks to the patreon team for working on the payment processing and letting us know whats happening, good or bad. I just got the email and i super appreciate the information. (Though i do second Ando that i’d love for the core platform to be better and from the monthly public crowdcasts you guys do, i know you know it and feel it too.)

I know some folks are really peeved that its likely to take a few days (and fair enough, everybody got bills to pay), and maybe I’m just old school but i’ve been on patreon since the end of 2013 and payments used to take almost a week to process back then. (I totally sound like a crotchety old lady waving her cane at the younguns and their crazy loud music lol) but I’m THRILLED when payments process in less than 5 days. When its 24ish hours i’m giddy!

Heck my patreon still runs as if the 5th of the month is the usual processing time and so my months are from the 5th to the 5th because that’s how processing used to be and i kept it that way for worst case scenarios.

It’s been a bit of a fiasco but thank you for being open with us about the issues and working so hard on it. The communication has come a long way in the last few years and I’m super thankful for the effort you guys are making on it. I know it’s not always easy and far from fun a lot of the time. It was one of my biggest general pain points and i gave you guys a lot of guff about it when i joined this forum community so i’m just really thankful for the information and involvement. It’s better to be informed even a few days early than dealing with things super last second without any.

I agree with Temrin here. I’ve been with Patreon since close to the beginning and my schedule is also based on the 5th of the month payday which was the usual date it was meant to be finished by. Perhaps the Help Page on payments could be a little clearer. Instead of saying that ‘payments are processed on the 1st’ it could say something like ‘all payments should be processed by the 5th of the month. If yours in not please contact…’ That should give the Patreon team more than enough leeway even in months where there may be problems with the system.

Seconding (or thirding) Temrin: While I haven’t been on patreon quite as long, I’ve always assumed that my true process date was for the 5th as some pledges don’t process for a few days. I plan my monthly budget based on this and prepare ahead.

It would be good to have the faq/help page say that things should process by the 5th so people know to plan bills around this information.
