Product Improvements Coming Soon

Thanks all for the feedback.

First, I wanted to provide a glimpse into our thinking and also some constraints we’re working with. The reason tiers are so prominent is because we’re looking to put as little of a barrier as possible for those visitors who need a clear and direct path to patronage. Those who need a deeper dive will scroll. As a reminder, the version of the design that puts tiers at the top performed considerably better in terms of conversion. The other thing I want to note is that the massive banner at the top has proven to be quite difficult to work around. We are still thinking for a better spot/treatment for it.

Second, I wanted to give this group a heads up, and let you know we will be conducting interviews to understand fan reactions to a few visual concepts we’re exploring, and designing tests around. I’m including screenshots here for you.

Thank you @ursula those look amazing! I don’t know if I could choose between them! Which is probably a good sign. I think the second one (stacked) is really good as it makes it very clear you’re getting extra with each tier jump. If i HAD to choose that one would be first choice and the second would be the horizontal scroll. All very exciting!

I’ve had to take a few days to mull over these changes because this feels like such a sharp left turn from everything we’ve seen thus far.

It appears to me that the idea of “let’s visualize the rewards!” really caught on after that little infographic got plugged in on the landing page. Maybe it caught on a little TOO much? I get it, making it visual with a little text blurb eliminates all the walls of text…but some of these look like an Instagram collage that is equally if not even more overwhelming visually.

The one thing about the recent changes that I felt actually worked, despite the backlash from a lot of people, was that it was a very straightforward and simplistic view of things. These options here look like a visual obstacle course to me. It’s a minefield of information, information that creators are going to have to bend over backwards to make work for them.

This process has been so drawn out, and each iteration requires new adjustments from creators, some adjustments much more convoluted than others depending on what they’re creating and how they present to their patrons.

If the reward boxes do not roll out with complete customization, it’s going to leave some creators wearing clown shoes without even realizing it. All of these changes heavily favor visual content creators, with these thumbnail sized boxes. Writers, podcasters, etc. are going to be left with…?

These changes are exhausting. I want to believe they’ll work out great in the end, but every time we see a light at the end of the tunnel it’s actually a new “better” iteration of the changes that were already a hard sell. I appreciate all the hard work from you and the team, and will try to remain hopeful.

P.S. Why is the banner at the top such a difficult thing to work around? Patreon just gave us the ability to change our brand colors, right? To try and make our pages feel more like OUR PAGES, so that potential patrons arriving recognize the brand and that trust is there. The banner is very much a part of that. It’s our biggest way to fly our flag on Patreon. It’s our Big Neon Sign. Like the golden arches for McDonalds. Brand recognition is really really really important. It should be at the top and covering/moving/minimizing it shouldn’t even be part of the discussion. What boggles my mind is that we already went through this? These discussions were already had? And the conclusion was “move the icon out of the way and let the banner speak for itself”, I thought? This might seem really nitpicky or like I’m whining, I just don’t understand how after all the feedback, all the changes before the landing page even became a thing, how it still comes to this. Which in turn makes me feel doubtful about basically everything, because if we can’t nail down the philosophy of creator’s having their banners, in the proper dimensions, uncovered by other widgets and information…then what reasonable expectation can there be that anything we’ve said anywhere else actually matters and is being taken into account?

@ursula I will just say that four years of making a comic that scrolls horizontally has taught me that people kind of hate scrolling horizontally, and that people who are used to scrolling by flicking their mouse wheel are almost physically repulsed by the thought of grabbing a scroll bar and moving it. I would bet money that A/B testing would show that you get a lot less eyeballs on the tiers with the little horizontally scrolling area.

I also wonder how these “featured rewards” are gonna work for someone like me who runs her page entirely as a tip jar and gives the same thing to everyone…

Out of all the previews shown, I’m really into the stacked view. As long as creators REALLY get to customize what that’s going to look like. The preview makes it look like there’s going to be an automatically selected image from our posts, and pre-made icons and all we get to change is the listed benefits. But I’d like to be able to customize every single piece of the display. Like Yuurivoice mentioned, we work SO HARD on our branding and I don’t want to become a sanitized display of myself to fit the patreon model. I want people to see my page and IMMEDIATELY know it’s me.

Also backing egupturnash, horizontal scrolling is a nightmare.

When are these designs going to be implemented - if at all? With the current landing page hiding the highest tiers under a “show more levels” button my income has decreased dramatically in the last few months, as I have had only 1 sign up to the highest tier, when I used to get easily 2-3 a month.

Why not just have all the tiers show. I think that’s the main issue everyone is having problems with, including myself. I have a dead tier that I dont want displayed. And I cant delete it because there is 100+ patrons in that tier and info only they have privilege to, but I’ve since capped that tier and now I dont want anyone joining it even if people leave it and space opens. It’s literally a dead tier.

Letting us chose what tier tiles to display in the front is ideal.

Horizontal scrolling is a nightmare also. It’s not intuitive. I rather have the show more button because at least it’s sort of there so people can catch it than wondering if the 3 displayed is the ONLY tiers.

The stacked one is nice, but takes up so much space and it’s so much information all at once.

The select a tier and then the info pops up under is nice. It’s concise, the info displayed is relevant to what you select and I HOPE it shows ALL tiers. Again please LET US CHOSE which to display!

I think really what you guys have NOW (the small compact tiles) is fine, but just let us show ALLLLL the tiers and let us chose which to show and which to hide.

Please!

I like the stacked tiers, accessible in sight but not shouting. I believe the all up top technique is more effective than the side bar because it asks for the sale very loudly. The drop down is a little quieter and keeps the focus on content and courtship. I think the follow tab should be added. There is a courtship period. By having a follow option in with the patronage options the dance continues.

Also echoing synnesai. PLEASE let us advertise all of our content instead of the first three. PLEASE let us choose what is shown to potential new patrons. I know myself and lots of other creators are so frustrated with our choice being taken away from us. We’re all being forced into the same box.

And once again, still confused about why the current landing page was pushed out so rushed if it was going to be changed anyways.

Our last update on the landing page was on December 19th, and it continues to be a source of anxiety and uncertainty. I know these things take time, but the radio silence is a little unnerving. Is there any update on how things are going?

I can’t speak for other creators, but since these changes started happening I’ve held off on:

  • Updating my about section
  • Designing a new banner + tier art
  • Rewriting tier descriptions
  • Adding/Removing tiers
  • Doing general promotion of my Patreon vs. linking to specific rewards/posts

I have put meaningful parts of my business on hold because being drip fed iterations of this specific product update could undo, break, or invalidate any changes I make in the interim. Timelines have been shifted and plans altered because I don’t feel confident that time or money invested into making my page better is going to pay off until I know what framework I’m going to be working with.

I hope these examples help put into perspective why updates and being in the loop matters to creators. With all that being said, I am actually excited to see this next and hopefully final-ish iteration of the landing page. Not just because I’m eager for it to be over with, but because designing my page to suit me and fine tuning my design is exciting! I’m hoping that in the long run, that excitement and final look wins out over the anxiety and frustration some have felt over the course of this roll out.

Thanks for reading!

Hi @YuuriVoice thank you for opening up about that,

We understand there is a lot of associated work with making your landing page represent the best of your membership.

While we’ve been quiet in this thread, we’re hard at work at continuing to validate the designs above with more fans and patrons. Some of the positive feedback we heard from those sessions echoed the sentiment we’ve heard here about the “Show More” button for tiers. The good news is that fans and patrons said our new designs allow for easier side-by-side comparison of ALL tiers.

Next, we’ll test a different way to display tiers with a small segment of creators and measure the results before we roll it out to everyone, ensuring positive effects on helping creators get more patrons. The last thing we want to do is move too quickly and not be sure that these changes will result in making it easier to acquire more patrons. We shared these designs with you all first and will continue to update you as we move along in the process. We’ll share the results as soon as we can.

The new landing page doesn’t really work for donation-based businesses (where memberships aren’t the primary draw).

I really miss being able to have my message first. I’m not offering significant membership benefits, so I want people to read my welcome letter before they even know what tithe levels there are.

It would be really nice if there were some basic configurations… like blocks… that we could re-order on our page (and configure for patrons vs. non-patrons).

Example…

Block 1: Welcome Message
Block 2: Membership Options
Block 3: Video
Block 4: Popular Tags

Then each Creator could configure what order they want those blocks to appear in. They could create one configuration for Patrons and another for non-Patrons (or people logged out).

I would universally, always, want my message to be first. My audience needs to know why supporting me is important before I put membership tiers in front of them.

I understand that most of Patreon Creators probably focus on the membership model. However, testing broad-scale changes like a whole new layout, without accounting for the specific model of a creator, is going to always leave some creators feeling frustrated that they aren’t able to put the right message at the right time in front of the right audience.

I like this idea! Having blocks where we can chose what goes in to that block I think would be a great way for each creator to make up how they want their page to look like and prioritize what they find important.

If that’s possible, I think this is something to consider.

I agree, The block set-up can be very customizable. Deviant Art has (or had) a version with many different options. Some options could only go certain places on the page. This allows a creator to make their page read in a way that makes sense to themselves and has maximum effect on their relationship with their patrons/followers. This also allows Patreon to step back from forcing one ‘best’ option (top down corporate behavior) on their creators because of ‘studies.’ Instead Patreon can make available and recommend without killing diversity and flexibility (both of which are key to survival).
