Patreon Messages or Emails to new Patrons?

I just launched my Patreon and have been responding to my first few patrons with Messages through the patreon platform. How do they see these? Do they get a notification? I think most of my patrons are totally new to Patreon. Maybe I should just email them instead.

I send each a welcome e-mail and follow up with a quick Bonjoro video ‘thank you!’
