I have a NSFW-tier ($10), which is quite popular. Every time I announce on social media that I have put up some new nsfw-art, I get one or more patrons. Which is nice. But here comes the funny part: Many of them just pay-up front (thank god I have pay-up-front activated!), and then leave right away after - I guess - grabbing the stuff they want. Ok, that’s fine by me. I get the money. But I think: Why don’t they just stick around, to get MORE of the stuff I post every week?
And here is an even more funny part: I recognize some of the names. So, there are guys (I guess) paying $10 to get my latest nsfw-stuff, then leave, and then resubscribe next month again! I even had two persons signing up two times in the SAME month!
By all means, I don’t mind people paying double up, but… why?
I guess some others of you guys making nsfw-stuff experience the same?
One reason might be that subscriptions leave traces that someone might not want to leave for a spouse or significant other to find. A one-off payment is easier to explain than a recurring one.
One very good way to do this is to use privacy.com which lets you create single-use credit card numbers and control how they are used and reported. I’ve used it to create single-use or limited-use cards for online purchases.
Or, it could also be that they want to give you more money.
This happens to me all the time. I have one patron who signs up and cancels every other month, so I asked him why! He gave me a few reasons: [1] he doesn’t like recurring billing, the feeling that a site is going to dip into his money without him explicitly initiating it, and [2] he wants to spread out his monthly ‘NSFW budget’ among several similar accounts.
A third thing I infer is that people who are used to supporting people on OnlyFans just have the habit of turning off monthly auto-billing.
I can relate to that, I generally don’t like subscriptions either. However, the good thing about subscribing to artists on Patreon is that you keep the stuff you download after you cancel your subscription (also applicable to other types of creators). So, it doesn’t really feel like a subscription and more like purchasing content on a recurring basis. It also comes handy when you are interested in some specific pieces, you can effectively purchase just those with a one-off monthly payment.
Regarding the budget, yeah, I do also have a budget for artworks (not just limited to NSFW). So, as much as I would love to subscribe to many many artists, there’s a hard limit to what I can afford.
