How to not obsess over numbers

Hey guys so month-end is around the corner and it’s that time we’re one tries not to obsess over the numbers and Patreon processes everything. How does one not fixate on numbers and the disappointment of it all that feels as if you are moving away from your goal when the numbers decrease.

I’m definitely not great at this either, but I try to put things in perspective when I catch myself going down that rabbit hole. Like, “How does it help me to think like this? Will I take action based off of these feelings, or will I just sit here and experience these feelings.” I don’t mean you should repress or force down those feelings, but it helps to practice redirecting your thoughts.

I don’t know how bad it is for you, but it might be worthwhile to look into spiraling, how to recognize signs, and prevent yourself from doing it.

You’re not alone though, I think most of us experience this in some way. Social media makes it tough to ignore x/ Good luck though!

Thank you so much. I try so hard to stay away on the first but then I’m like just a peek and then from there I just can’t stop. But I will try to restrain

ah lol i think everyone knows this feeling to some extent. sambeawesome’s comment is really good, but i wanted to add that if you can’t stop yourself from looking or worrying every time or immediately, don’t beat yourself up. this kind of stuff is a learned skill and after a lifetime of being raised with an internet that emphasizes “number go up good, number go down bad” and/or getting a big number above everything else, it’s hard to immediately shake that kind of thinking.
fluctuation is scary as hell because it really hammers home the uncertainty of being self-employed or freelancing, but it’s not a bad thing, its just kind of a part of the job. it’s like the tides going in an out.
i hope things stay good for you.

Thank you. :relaxed: I hope yours go well too. That’s true, it’s brings so much doubt and uncertainty. It starts to feel as if you don’t know what more to do.

It’s a lot easier if you’re not depending entirely on Patreon for your entire revenue stream of course. Much easier to not obsess over stuff that’s not gonna affect your ability to keep a roof over your head.

If you’re getting major drops then it’s probably time to ask around and figure out why. Personally I’m not a fan of hassling each drooped patron personally, I’d just post on whatever social media I’m mostly on and say something like “hey, I’ve been losing a lot of patrons lately, I know it’s been a long damn year and we’re all increasingly broke, but if there’s anything I’m doing that’s driving y’all away beyond that I’d love to know!”.

In the long run, churn is constant. Shit happens and people need to reduce their expenses, new people come on or old ones come back when their finances are doing better…

True I have to keep going and see we’re I’m going wrong

Hi Tania,

Thank you for putting this call out to at top of the month! I just wanted to share this amazing workshop we held last week called You are more than the numbers that covers this topic

You can see a short “about the workshop” here!

Hope this helps <3

Stay away from these numbers! They don’t mean a thing. What comes, comes - what leaves, leaves. It is what it is. It’s better to focus on what YOU like, and not what gives you the numbers. Looking at those only makes you feel sad, and trying to increase the numbers may result in you doing things that you don’t like. Better to stay true to yourself, and create what you like. That’s how I do it. I don’t care about the numbers. If people don’t like what I create they are free to leave. They will come back another day.
