Raise your hand if you’re a procrastinator + perfectionist. (I definitely am )
Productivity is a difficult skill to master, but it is such an important part to the creative process. Some creators publish their art and share it with the world despite the fact that they may not think it’s finished. I wanted to share some advice on how to increase your productivity and create more art.
How to increase productivity is one of my favorite videos from @Jack_Conte . Check out his take on productivity and how to work to publish.
This is fabulous! It is exactly what I did back in 2015. I was struggling to record and upload even one video a week to YouTube. I had spent a whole year off trying to decide if I even wanted to do YouTube full time. It was sooo stressful because I was super perfectionistic about my painting lessons. I had to have everything worked out ahead of recording. Every minor detail figured out and only then would I record and then spend hours upon hours editing out only the best parts. It was exhausting! So a friend said something to me that really changed my outlook. She is an expert in personality studies and she told me that my type of perfectionist personality puts out more effort than the norm. So my 50% effort is actually equal to most people’s 100% effort. For some reason that really resonated with me and I realized that my “good enough” was going to be just fine to put out there. I started to do livestream recordings because it took out the editing aspect. Once it was done it was done. “It is what it is” became my mantra. It forced me to stop obsessing about every little detail and just get to work. It freed up my whole attitude toward making art and guess what? I have now been putting up 3-4 videos a week for the last 3 years. No burn out. Very little stress. It has been life changing. Thanks for sharing your story Jack. I never really realized why it was working for me but now I get it. Publishing is freeing.
Thanks for sharing this! I am struggling with the same thing about releasing on youtube – it’s paralyzed my editing because I am learning and by default I have been thinking it won’t be good enough because I am a beginner. If I reset the goal to “get it done” instead of “be a genius” I think it’s really gonna help!
