Feature Request: the ability to move a patron (who has not selected a reward) to the appropriate tier for their pledge

This suggestion is something I’ve wanted for a long time, but it was put into words by @Watsup and @TeamJemjie in another thread. (Just wanted to give them credit!)

I have some patrons who have been very generous with their pledged amount but have never selected a rewards tier, so I manually include them on everything I do/send anyway because they definitely deserve it.

Being able to assign them to the appropriate tier would be REALLY great for my record keeping, planning, etc.

Hi there! Thanks for the suggestion. At this time, we don’t let creators move patrons into tiers. This is for a few reasons, namely that it would affect billing since the tiers correspond to paid amounts and bad-players could abuse this system. From our experience, patrons have to go out of their way to move off a tier and it’s usually on purpose because they don’t want to get physical benefits, etc. Have you tried asking them — thanking them for their support and saying how much it would help you with your record keeping?

Well, just as an example, one of them is an elderly family friend and just helping her create her account was an interesting experience. She just forgot to select a reward somehow since she was giving a custom amount and I don’t want to hassle her with trying again. (The recent “randomly decline lots of credit cards” problem was frustrating enough for her, ha!)

But it sounds like I’ll just keep moving them manually. Thanks for replying!

I would like this also as I have done away with certain tiers and made new ones and now several of my patrons are otherwise in limbo. It’s not that they don’t want rewards, just that they are still pledging at a level that no longer has a specific reward attached to it.

Would also be great for that patron that supports every month at a $25 level with no current tier for when I open a limited time commission tier, I could just put her into it giving her first dibs for her generosity.

I would also like this! I have two patrons that are without a tier because I have deleted the tiers they initially selected… it’s just makes the patreon manager messier, and also they dont count for the benefits which kinda defeats the point of having all the tasks organized.

I will be happy with being able to move them only between a the “no tier” and a tier with the same amount as they are pledging, but I also think that being able to move them to a tier that is lower then their pledge is fine since a patron can pledge a custom higher amount while choosing a low tier (choosing 2$ tier but pledging 5$)

Would it not make sense to at least give the creator the option to give rewards to any patron they choose regardless of what level they pledge? Since the creator is the one deciding to benefit the patron it should be up to us to pick the rewards we give. So if I decide to do a promotion and let a $5 level member see my $10 level posts for one month as special gift I should be able to do that. The system now limits the creators. We would never be allowed to NOT give rewards to patrons who pay for the level but we should be able to go in and assign higher values to different accounts if we choose to. This way I could allow my channel moderators to enjoy my Patreon benefits too.

Another issue I am having is that I just added a new (highest) tier level and my old posts are not visible to them. I should be able to allow them to view posts I made in the past. As the system works now I would have to go back and edit every old post manually to include access for the new tier.

I can actually agree with this… Creators should be allowed to give patreons rewards of higher tiers, it should be their choice, since they are the one delivering the rewards.

In addition, I strongly recommend that for every manual tier change the patron will be notified via notification and email that their tier has changed. This will make sure that the patron is aware of the change and can take action (such as unpledge or change their tier again).
However, please make that this notification will be sent out only after about 10 minutes from the change, in case the change was a mistake and the creator has returned the patron to their original tier. It would be annoying to get multiple notifications about a mistake that has been fixed.

I kind of want this feature too, but I can see the complications.

For example, I have a Patron who selected No Reward before the tier change happened. I tried to guide him through selecting a tier when the change was made. He said he did it, but it didn’t work. So now I have to send him his reward via a message every month. It’s not a huge deal since he’s kind of a friend too, but it would be so much easier if could move him or have him moved to the appropriate tier.

If I were a patron to someone with this ability, I wouldn’t want them to be able to move me around. If I was having trouble with getting myself to a tier I would ask the creator or patreon support but I wouldn’t be okay with people having the ability to
move me around at will. I also have patrons that don’t want a reward but want to support anyways. It shouldn’t be up to me to choose for them. I can see it getting abused and causing so many issues. If the patron and creator agree to it, having patreon staff
move someone would be more appropriate imo if it was a bug or non computer savvy folks, etc.

I would like this, but I would prefer to click a button next to their name, asking Patreon to send them a message to choose a tier, with the direct link to where the patron would do that. Likewise, I would like this for address info—because after four years on Patreon, I know some of my patrons have moved, and I don’t have the ability to update this when a new address pops up for them when we’re doing a collaborative art project, or they back me on Kickstarter. A handy button letting me request info, with a canned message from Patreon guiding them through it, would be excellent.

(Actually, it would be great if Patreon would just send out a message to patrons once a year, asking them to check that their address is still correct, with a link to where to correct it.)

That would 100% solve my problem because my people who have trouble mostly just have trouble GETTING to the right place… and I bet this would be an easy feature to add. GREAT idea!!

Yes! I love that idea. That’s actually much better than Creators doing it, at least to me.

Yep, same here! Lisa is a genius! I would change my original post above to THIS idea, but I don’t think I can edit it at this late date… or can I?

I’d like to add my agreement to this idea! I would LOVE to click a button to send someone a reminder to check a new tier (or a “no thanks, I don’t want any rewards” option). Having the ability to remind someone about that without hoping they’ll open up your umpteenth email/message would be so great.

Quick update for you on this! I raised this request with the product team today and they let me know that we did build a feature where a patron will see a prompt to select a tier if they are paying the right amount but do not have it selected.

It looks like this:

This doesn’t fully solve your problem of wanting to be able to proactively ask patrons to make this choice, but it does mean that patrons are reminded to do it. Hope that helps! Please continue to update this thread with more details about the problem this feature would solve.
