I recently surveyed my patrons and learned that 29% of them would prefer to pay in currencies other than USD. I know Patreon does not accept other currencies at this time. Are there any plans to accept other currencies in future?
I sense this is a potentially large market for creators (and Patreon) as I am often contacted by readers who make non-USD donations (eg: via Donorbox) and who wish they had access to Patreon benefits.
I wish that other currencies were already options too. Keep bumping my head against fact that UK potential patrons won’t do USD out of fear for being hit by bank/card charges. Also need Canadian dollars and Euros as options.
Yes! I’m in Canada and have a bunch of Canadian patrons. The issue of the exchange rate alone is a challenge! Plus, I get have international folks, too!
Hi @DrPaulEllis, welcome to the Patreon community forum! Thanks for joining and making this post.
In short; yes! This is something we want to build in the future.
A longer answer: One of the things we mentioned when we launched our new creator plans was how these changes would unlock the ability for us to invest in core features and services to make Patreon better for all creators. That includes building a world class payments infrastructure, with annual plans and internationalization, especially for Euro and GBP countries. I have no timeline I can provide but will keep you posted as and when I am able to
Hey Folks, Wyatt (Head of Product) here. We are officially planning on adding currencies in the future. We’ll invite some of you to test out the beta soon!
Thanks so much for starting this conversation! We’re currently looking at a few different ways that we could build ability to accept other currencies and would love to speak those of you who have patrons who want to pay in different currencies. Would any of you be open to a quick conversation with our product design and research team focused on solving this?
I’d be happy to, Vanessa! I have patrons who are from Canada, USA and Australia as far as I am aware. If I’m able to answer things,
I’d be happy to. However I’m also happy to propose questions to my patrons as well if you have anything you’d like me to ask them before hand. Just let me know! I can also give insight into being a creator not from the USA as well if there’s anything you’d
like to ask on that front.
Yes, I would be happy to participate. Right now I have set up Donorbox to accept donations in about 6 currencies for supporters who don’t wish to contribute in USD. The number one question I get from Donorbox donors is, “Can I still get Patreon benefits?” It puts me in a tricky position. I don’t want them to miss out, but it doubles the admin load.
Hi Wyatt, I was just about to send a message to patrons saying “Patreon has plans to add other currencies but there is no timeframe.” Can I suggest a timeframe? Six months? Twelve months?
So exciting that @Wyatt confirmed this is officially happening!
@DrPaulEllis we don’t know the specific dates yet, but we’re currently in the discovery phrase working out the specifics of how we can implement multiple currencies. Once that work is complete, it will give us a better understanding how long the entire process might take. I’d hate to give you a timeline that ended up being unrealistic! Thank you so much for offering to participate as well
That is brilliant to hear! As a UK Creator most of my members are American (around 90%) with only the odd patron from other countries. I only have two members from the UK that I know of. I have also heard from potential UK patrons turned off from joining due to the USD currency, I can imagine this also applies to other countries as well.
My members are mostly of the retirement age, so dealing with a different currency can sometimes be daunting for some, mind you I’m only 50 and I find I have to carefully consider payment in a currency I’m not used to.
So BIG thank you for starting the ball rolling with this plan, the sooner the facility is here, fingers crossed the sooner other viewers may decide on joining up.
Paul
You have a lot of eurpean customers. Customers making a lot of money through the Patreon System. There is still a fee, that we all have to pay, changing the money collected by Patrons from USD back to Euro. Also the fee, that our Patrons have to pay changing their money from EUR to USD.
Why?
Why is there no way to directly collect the patron money in Euro? Is it really THAT complicated?
Hey @soerenvogelsang! Welcome to the forum and thanks for the suggestion. I’ve merged your request into a larger thread about non-US currencies and if you scroll up you’ll’ see @Wyatt, Head of Product at Patreon, shared that we are officially adding currencies in the near future It is quite complicated as currently the entire codebase of Patreon has never had to understand that multiple currencies exist, so it’s work that not only impacts our payments system, taxes, VAT, language etc, but also the entire code Patreon is built on. But we’re working on it!
