Hey I wanted to know if anyone knows alternative sites like patreon that are writer friendly. For example were I can post a full novel or post chapters is sequence? So that my patrons don’t suffer scrolling or looking for previous posts?
The other sites I know that are especially for writers are places like Archive of Our Own and Wattpad, but they aren’t subscription services like Patreon is. There’s also Subscribe Star which is very similar to Patreon, but you would probably run into the same issue.
My suggestion would be to make sure that one of your tags for the book chapters is the name of that story. All patrons would have to do then is go to that tag and they could more easily get to all of the chapters without scrolling through unrelated previous posts. You could also post links at the bottom of each chapter post to the previous and preceding chapters for easier navigation between chapters.
I’m experimenting with Substack: Paperback Writer
So far, I’ve posted my first novel for free and added a genre-appropriate public domain story.
I hope to provide subscription access to sequels and audio versions of my books, short stories, and author readings. Those are just a few possibilities.
I’m hoping to grow the list of free subscribers a bit more before I charge for anything. This is all quite experimental, so who knows if it’ll work.
Excellent suggestion on tagging!
True let me try that and I found something about linking wordpress
Let me try it
I’d be interested in sharing notes on the results. I’m being cautious about asking readers for money, but I need to get over that.
In fact, I hope to share any successes on my YouTube channel and blog(s).
It definitely takes getting used to, but think of it this way, is asking readers to support you on Patreon, or another subscription service, really any different than asking people to buy a finished book?
Excellent point. Much of this comes down to taking steps to spread the word in a way that engages people. I guess.
I’ve been experimenting with using the tags. I’ve added a Navigation Hint post, pinned to the top. I’ve set up links there that use tags to sort everything and allow the users to easily scroll through the posts of a given sequence in the right order.
Hi @Debbi_Mack,
As Amanda Palmer would put it, you don’t have to ask for money, you can give them a chance to give you some.
I’ve heard from many patrons (my own and those of other creators) that some are just happy to have a way to give. Sure, some want something in return for their money. But some are just happy to be able to help, to have another way to say thank you than just the words. And I’m one of those. The creator I give the most to doesn’t give me anything in return. I would get exactly the same content if I wasn’t giving him any money. But I value his work and want to help him keep on creating.
It won’t make it easy for you, I know. But maybe a bit less difficult?
All the best,
Thomas
We use a pinned and public table of contents on our writing-based Patreon. It’s also featured/linked on the front page so potential Patrons can see what we have to offer. It helps Patrons (and us!) find particular posts without needing to search tags or tiers.

It took an hour or so to make, and while it needs to be updated (I’m a few months behind) I find it incredibly useful. Maybe this will help!
I really like that idea! I was thinking of doing something similar.
Thank you! I’m glad posting it has helped someone
