There are so many ways to tie everything together! Be sure to ask any questions you have.
I’m sure your server members appreciate that enthusiasm and drive!
Woo hoo! Awesome and a bit overwhelming. I think I had a hard time seeing/reading the screen … dark and blurred text… and that made it harder to take in the basic steps to setting up the first server. I’ve been in tech for over 40 years and used a lot of forums. Heard from many ‘admin’ that they are a bear to manage so have been a little hesitant.
Saw in recent livestreaming concert events our fans starting conversations with each other in the comments… and it was a beautiful connection which got me thinking I need to set up Discord server for them.
Even though I had a hard time following the images, it was very informative. Is there a document on ‘best basic practices’ or something like that for
-
Introducing Patrons to use (we have many older lower tech people that would be hesitant so will need to have ‘activities’ and simplicity to get them started)… the techies will get it instantly.
-
How can it be structured to start to keep adminstrative duties to minimum?
-
Are ‘events’ like live chat times effective? We have a monthly online gathering which is fun for patrons. Maybe a chat time would be a good introduction for our whole 'ohana.

Look forward to more workshops for different levels on Discord.
You can use the light mode and the dark mode for your personal viewing. That was the dark mode in the workshop. You can add graphics, a server banner, and a gif server icon also. Honestly you can do quite a bit if you really put the time into it!
Honestly not that difficult compared to teaching them to use Patreon itself. Just explain how they can easily chat in Discussion channel, and show them how to find it. The more you help explain it, the easier they will find it. I know of quite a few older members that use Discord =]
Honestly, there are always new ways to improve your server. I hope to cover a lot of information that will help in the next workshop. Be sure to post your questions so that I can try to answer them the best I can. Thanks for attending!
Attended the crowdcast by @ManateeGaming! Thanks for hosting that! The question I asked was, do users need a discord account to access the content, or can they view as a guest…
and the answer was YES they would need to set up a discord account.
I’m still on the fence about whether discord would be right for me… I have a few but very loyal followers, and I want to offer them some interactive live-streaming content, but I’m really nervous about asking them to sign up for a new platform. I think a lot of them are in an older age bracket, or are not very familiar with social media technology in general. I’m still trying to convince most of them to use the Patreon APP instead of just reading my posts through their emails!! Ahh!
I am still learning what is possible within Patreon itself- I have never used discord, even as a user, so my learning curve is pretty steep! I’ll bounce around and see how far I can get. I’m excited to rewatch the broadcast and try to follow along step by step. Thank you for doing this! Count me in for a follow up Crowdcast.
Definitely a helpful workshop, but I am glad I am a gamer, and already familiar with Discord’s basics.
I was utterly clueless, though, about the bots and their usefulness, and it had frankly scared me off trying to integrate a channel into my Patreon. Why would I want it? What would it do? Bots are generally annoying and scary, right? OK then, I think I am over that now.
Suggestion: reach out to a diverse handful of creators who are already using Discord effectively. (Cat Rambo, ex-SFWA president and amazing writer has an extremely active one, for just one example.) Ask them if you could share what they’re doing as an example of what might be done? If we can see examples, it will make a LOT more sense than telling us what buttons to click and sliders to slide. (I say that as someone of middling tech-savvyness but definitely feeling a bit out of my depth – but that’s why I signed up for the workshop right?)
All in all, a good job and thank you. I look forward to the deeper dive workshop also.
the webinar was so helpful, I’m going to have to rewatch it to completely digest it all. I’m looking forward to seeing Cody’s follow up on discord 2.
I’m so new to all of this both Patreon and now Discord, but with all of these webinars I’m sure I’ll be up and running like a champ.
Thank you, that’s definitely helpful!
Thanks everyone for all the great questions and for joining our workshop! and to @ManateeGaming and @laurab for being such a great teachers too
I’m sending everyone who commented a DM with a link to claim your free Patreon mug!
A few extra tips:
- I wanted to make a correction from the workshop: patrons don’t need to have the same email address for both their Patreon and Discord accounts. All that needs to happen is that the Discord account is connected on Patreon - instructions on how to do that here.
- We have a step by step video on how to add Discord as a benefit in your tiers
Is there some limitations for mobile version? Or all features from DT should be available on mobile as well? Does patrons use discord on DT in most cases? How many patrons actually joined discord once they invited? (%)
Fantastic webinar!. I installed Discord last year to test it, but as soon as I entered I felt very confused.
I thought about using Telegram, since it is easier for me (I am an erotic’s writer in spanish, and it is more popular for here than Discord), but now I confirm that, from Patreon, it is easier to make the connection for each patronage.
I’m going to take a look at the Discord app and think of a way to use it as a complement to my artwork.
Hi @Liz_Danforth! Thanks for the great suggestions! I think this could definitely be a solid next phase of our education around Discord - I agree with you, there are some amazing ways non-gaming creators are using Discord and highlighting a few of them could be a really great way of making it feel more accessible for folks. I think it could be a good blog feature, and will touch base with those folks :-).
So glad the workshop was helpful!
Hi @BonitaHakone! So glad you enjoyed the workshop. We’re so appreciative of @ManateeGaming for sharing his expertise, and the integration is pretty awesome if you decide it’s right for you.
I’ve seen some visual artists use Discord as a place to connect and chat informally, and also host lessons or short how-to’s, open “office hours,” or have fans vote on color-schemes/characters in their art occasionally. I bet there are a lot of other things you could do with it, just sharing what I’ve seen.
I use the discord to get closer to my patrons - they are able to commission me , since I’m able to stream my work while we chat. Once the drawing is ready - I’m getting my pay - and very shortly after - they get their drawing, thus the tension is lowered - BUT most of all that’s a proof for them that I’m real, what I do is real and they come back over and over. So far I didn’t discovered yet the “community” creation yet - as I don’t have a lot of patrons, but from what I found on other servers - it could be either too toxic , or just cool and nice/not something in the middle…
Helloooo friends! Thank you all for your participation in this thread - we love to see the questions and conversations!
Next week (6/16), Cody will be joining us again with a follow up to this session, to dive deeper into what is possible on Discord. Register, learn more, and leave questions for the Cody and Laura to address during the workshop here → Workshop: Advanced Discord Community Tools
Hope to see you all there.
