Hey Patreon team. Great start to the tax adjustments tool. Continuing with some ideas for future user interface improvements:
- Sounds silly, but could you automatically calculate the sum of the benefit allocation percentages at the bottom instead of marking all the boxes red and saying they need to total 100%? Yes, I can get out my calculator or spend the time on mental arithmetic, but it would be much easier to see a red “99%” at the bottom and I just know to add the 1% to a benefit.
- Can you have the option to specify a dollar value on the benefits per month, instead of percentage, so that the benefit percentages can be calculated automatically in the higher tiers that include them? Patreon could consider automatically calculating the remainder as “general support” to total 100%. I had to create a spreadsheet to calculate the weighting and it would be nice to have it as a built-in feature.
- Would you consider a feature to list all the benefit tax allocations for different tiers side-by-side, like a table? I found it frustrating to click and edit each tier individually.

As soon as my patrons got a heads up about the sales tax, I lost 30 of them within a day (about $120 worth). It’s costing me more money than Patron is supposedly “saving” me. I’m a college student with no government financial assistance and this is now my only source of income.
Patreon already takes about $150 in other fees and taxes every month, and if this is gonna drop my income even more I’ll be completely screwed financially.
Thinking about just creating my own website and just dumping Patreon.
It’s not something Patreon or other online sites where you sell through, can really help unfortunately. Governments want their share of digital earnings and businesses have to comply eventually.
I totally understand your troubles here. I try to supplement my patreon earnings with passive income elsewhere but i know that’s not always an option for everyone. I hope you are able to find a solution!

I am just seeing that I need to do something with the Sales Tax thing.
I do not understand any of it at all.
I also don’t have the time, energy or mental capacity to do all this.
I am so done with everything.
How will this affect my Patreon? can I no longer use it?

Not completing it will not prevent you from getting income or using patreon, don’t worry! If you don’t do it, Patreon will just make their best guess on what sales tax to apply via keywords in your tiers, so you don’t have to do anything at all if you don’t want to.
The reason to look into it is because you can control what % of each benefit is what, which can save your patrons money on taxes but you aren’t required to do it.

Yes, they could do that. Don’t expect it to be high on their list of changes to make, but they can.
No, they probably won’t do that. The reason why not is because sales taxes are determined by where the customer is, there are many separate jurisdictions, and sales tax is usually calculated as a percentage for each one.

I can’t believe that we need to go to a group call to get basic functionality to edit my tiers and add sales tax information. Please just make those tiers “basic support” and let me create. I’ve stopped coming here because it has become so incredibly frustrating that it leaves me without the spoons to create anymore.
Patreon has become the biggest barrier for my work these days. The less I interact with the backend of Patreon, the better things are.
