Thankyou Mindy I appreciate that answer which actually answers my question partly but what about being in the UK do we need to do anything?
You’re welcome! Being in the UK makes no difference to the answer both I and @Temrin provided
Question: We’re a newspaper. Our tiers include: a newspaper mailed subscription (not taxable), a sponsor ad for non profit (not taxable), digital front page (not taxable), and hat (taxable merchandise).
The hat is easy. BUT, how do I accommodate the newspaper subscription and ad, that are not taxable. I do not see a pull down category for that type of traditional media. Thanks for the help.
Hello! I have a question about the sales tax on things that I purchase and then give to my Patrons. I’m a writer and as part of my tiers I purchase eBooks and paperbacks from Amazon – paying sales tax when I do that – and then send my Patrons either the code to download the book or a signed paperback through the mail. Since I already paid sales tax, are my Patrons going to be taxed again – as in double taxation?
Thanks for any help you can provide!
In Jack’s video he says you can set ‘general support’ benefit to be higher weighted than digital content to reduce sales tax for the Patrons. Can I set general support to 100%? My patrons subscribe pretty much entirely for general support, I think only one of my patrons has actually redeemed any of the download codes they have received.
I got an email this morning saying I hadn’t done everything needed to prepare for the sales tax change. I thought I had. I reviewed all my tiers just now and they all appear to have the necessary identifications (none of my tiers offer tangible value, my patrons give solely for support.
Can someone look at my tiers and confirm this? What have I not done?
Thanks in advance Mindy!
What benefit category do we use for benefits that are one-time “thank you” gifts?
We got an answer via the creator discord
Holy crap! LOL Thanks @Temrin. You rock.
Hello,
I just got an email, stating that I hadn’t finishend my tax set up:
“Our records show you added General Support as a benefit on some or all of your tiers, but that’s just the first step.”
But that’s not right. I added General Support to the tiers among all the other kind of benefits like “behind the scenes”, “Physical goods” etc. so I’m not sure, what to do.
Should I delete “General Support” from the tiers, so that only the other benefits remain?
Thank you for your help
Katrin
No problem Perry! I was really concerned about it too!
Hey folks, @Perry_Gruber @Katrin_Ils
We’re terribly sorry for the confusion regarding the sales tax email! If you received this email, it is because you have not finished updating the “Adjust benefit value” feature. To finish this:
- Click on Edit Tier on each one of your tiers
- Scroll down to the Advanced settings and click the arrow to open
- Check the box that says “Adjust benefit value for sales tax”
- Then follow the instructions
This step needs to be completed on all of your tiers, published and unpublished.
A small percentage of you may have completed the settings over the weekend. If so, you’ll see a pop up message when you login to Patreon.com telling you that you have completed the process and can disregard the email. So sorry again for the confusion! Let us know if you have any other questions - we’re always happy to help.
Hey Reyna,
I clicked on my first tier and apportioned the value by 50%. It looks like in my second tier your software is asking me to add two benefits to enable the advanced function. There are NO benefits. None at all. None of my tiers have benefits. The fact that my first tier has two listed is only because I did that to enable the advanced function. Are you saying I need to add two fake benefits just to activate this function, then complete that function?
I went ahead and added fictitious “benefits” to my tiers just to get this off my to do list. Seems like this is a bug in this tier set up…maybe have this fixed?
I see what you’re saying! Sending you a DM.
A thought: if none of your tiers have benefits, set them all to a benefit of “General Support,” which is for when the patron is getting nothing.
You don’t need to create nonsense benefits, just use that one.
I set my lowest two tiers to General Support as the only benefit, but I still got the message that I haven’t completed my sales tax settings. What do I need to do to complete it? All the other tiers are adjusted with multiple benefits and percentages chosen.
OK, phew, just got the message saying I did actually complete it.
The problem is I can’t configure the advanced section with just one benefit. Apparently it is set to work with two or more. I think Patreon is contacting new tomorrow to talk this through.

Hello. I’m one of the procrastinators that has to deal with this in the next 24 hours! Sorry -_-;;
I run our community choir’s Patreon account. One of the lower tiers offers a free pair of tickets to our concerts in perpetuity. My questions:
- The value of three free pairs of tickets per year ($90) exceeds the value of the $5/month tier where it’s offered ($5/month = $60/year). Does this mean we have to adjust our offering to one ticket per concert instead of a pair so that we can tax it accordingly?
- Most of our patrons do NOT take advantage of these tickets. In fact, more than half of our supporters are out of town and get exclusive access to our livestream. How could I account for this fact so that our out-of-town patrons aren’t taxed for a benefit they will never receive? (Plus, we don’t have any concerts planned for the foreseeable future due to the pandemic.) [Edit: I’m considering listing these tickets as “one-time gifts” to resolve this issue. Is this problematic?]
- I noticed that we can’t put fractions of percentages. If I price “exclusive online content” at $1/month, that’s 20% of a $5/month tier but 0.2% of a $500/month tier. Could I list 100% of the benefit as “general support” since all the other stuff becomes negligible?
