Open Studio #4: Updated fan pages

You’re right, and I addressed that towards the end of my post, but here’s the thing. The really big thing that I think has been an issue forever on Patreon.

When the money has exchanged hands, people do not care about in depth introductions. They do not want to be explained to. They want whatever the heck it is you’re making, and to date all they have is chronological scrolling, tags, and date/tier filters…and those things only work exclusively from one another to my understanding (just trying to test it right now was a bit of a mindfuck).

The issue is that we’ve HAD to create these sections that direct traffic because Patreon’s design and infrastructure is extremely limited and at times actively works against us. I have people who can’t scroll through my heavily populated tags on the app because it simply STOPS LOADING, for example.

Right now getting content is an obstacle course that is only made easier by organizational gymnastics on the part of the creators. The sort of gymnastics that the team is clearly trying to eliminate because you can see in their effort to handle the FAQ side of things themselves, they’d like to refine that process and handle things that should be handled on Patreon’s end.

I feel like there is a massive need for that type of direction and effort on the browsing and content side of things. Creating navigation posts littered with hyperlinks, more walls of texts, more clicking, more thinking, it turns being a patron into a hassle. Rewards are supposed to be rewarding, and easily attainable. Right now there are lots of us who are successful in spite of these shortcomings because we’ve learned to work within the restrictions, but that doesn’t mean we shouldn’t push for more, push for improvements, and push for a design that is intuitive, user friendly, and effective.

I think fundamentally that putting another fill in the blank text box at the forefront of the Patron “landing page” is a significantly lesser option than coming up with something that interacts more like a content hub. A gallery, maybe boxes that work a lot like the tiers do, that have an image, a brief description and link that takes you to the tag or “page”. Things that let you retain creative control but also serve as much better ways to get the people paying you for content to that content.

It might be a lot to ask for, but there are so many ways that a content suite could be dreamed up and implemented that would blow a “here’s a guide to my content, good luck!” wall of text/images out of the water and would help so many creators. Not everyone has the talent and skill to turn a blank page into an intuitive guide to their content, and having that be a functional part of the foundation of a creator’s page would be extremely helpful to many creators.

Seeing these proposed changed to the Landing Page and how the entire experience functions for non-patrons makes me thing that maybe the team is ready to tackle some big ideas on the Content Page side of things for the patron view. There’s certainly a lot of room for those big ideas, and I’m hopeful for the future.

tldr: if you’ve given me money, how much more ABOUT me or my content do you need to know?

Right, and I completely agree with you, I just think these systems take a long time to build out and in the end, a simple blank page might be something content creators would like anyway, so it’s not entirely wasted effort.

I’m a patron on a lot of campaigns and the first thing I look for is tagged posts that lead me to content after I sign up or posts that tell me more about the creator. Knowing a creator is a big part of building fans that will stick with you through the more difficult points in your career.

A simple solution that we can have now is better than a complex one that may never happen. Especially when the simple solution will remain useful beyond the completion of the complex one.

I think this looks fab  Thank You!

  • Are you excited by the proposed changes to how we show your description? We’d love to hear specific pieces that you are intrigued by, or feel need further exploration.
I’ve found my goal list really hard to build without it looking like a list of my expenses or a wish list so to find out it makes no difference to Patrons is frankly a huge relief  I’m happy to dispense with that as soon as you like.
Really interesting to learn about the 100-400 characters for the intro. I can feel another revamp brewing…

  • Which options for displaying memberships do you prefer?
The Crystal Choi layout appeals to me more

  • Which of your tiers would you feature if you had the chance? Why/why not?
I only have three but if I needed to feature one I’d choose my $10 Brushstrokes tier as it’s the most popular

  • How would you adapt the way you speak to fans and patrons if you had separate space to address each?
Not sure, but possibly a tad more personal to my Patrons.

  • What questions or concerns do you have about these changes? No

  • Is there any killer feature that we missed for turning every creator’s fans into patrons?
You’ve probably already thought of this but could we put a 'thank you for visiting “_” ‘s Patreon page, here’s some useful info you might like:’ or words to that effect? That way it keeps it friendly as well as asking for the membership.

Looking forward to seeing how the changes map out

How about kicking out a CSV or PDF for us interested?

Hi thedailyba!

Unfortunately we’re not able to share that set of data right now publicly (or outside the company at all) at that level of granularity.

But I can extend an invitation to the whole thread to participate directly in the next round of research we’re conducting on the impact of short vs. long descriptions. We’ll start this experiment in about 2 weeks and it will last for 2-3 weeks. The test will implement a show/hide functionality on your current description, similar to what is in the mocks (none of the content in your description will change). At the end of opt-in experiment we will be able to share some personalized data with each of you directly.

I’ve spoken to a couple of you directly, but I’m opening this invitation to any creator reading this thread – if you’re interested, please DM me with the subject “I want in!” And a link to your Patreon page. I’ll follow up with you and confirm when the experiment is going live.

Thanks!

A concern that we have if you move to using a rather short description (with a “Show More” at the bottom) is that we have 2 campaigns, and at the bottom of the description for each of our Creator pages we have a paragraph like this one: “Please note: This campaign supports the Futility Closet podcast. There’s a separate campaign for the Futility Closet website. We greatly appreciate contributions to either campaign!”

It is vital that that be shown and not be hidden. Having it accessible only after someone has to click on Show More would be pointless.

Is this the right place to respond, @mindy? If so, I’m in!

I think is going to be very helpful, as many patrons pledge without knowing exactly how it works and then get frustrated.
Being able to arrange membership plans around the main page, is what I’m more excited about.

I’m late to the party but I’m loving this!
I would love to have a way to have an about section the is only shown to non-patrons and an about section that is only shown to patrons, that way for non-patrons I could show more of the basics of introduction and becoming a patron while for patrons I could currate more about their rewards and how to get them.

About section: Displaying the first 400-500 characters, and if longer allowing a fan to “show more” to view the full description.

I’m not much of a fan of the “show more” point though cause I’m afraid of people missing out on information they are looking for. I think perhaps more options in formatting the About section can be useful, such as collapsing tabs.

Posts: Reducing the total number of posts we show on the Overview page, and adding a link next to posts to view all (go to the /posts tab).

I feel like having a grid of posts would be better then the current look of posts on the overview page. like a 3x2 grid of the most recent posts, that feature the 6 latest posts. Each cell of the grid will have the title and the first few words of the post or the teaser text. If it’s and image post it should show the image in a smaller dimensions. Underneath could be a button to see all posts. Perhaps about there will be a “featured post” the will be full size. I hope this makes sense, and of course this is only my idea of it but it might not be something that fits others

I don’t think I would feature any tiers cause I wouldn’t want to scare people off thinking that they can only start pledging from X$. I’d rather they see there is a low tier first.

Keep up the great work
