How frequently do you post?

Nearly all my patron-only posts are for my lowest tier and up. The only exception are much less frequent posts for $18 and up, to which digital rewards are attached.

I post roughly 3 times a week.
Two posts a month are patron-only, the rest (9-11 posts on average) are public.

My experience is that patron-only posts are significantly less of a driver for new patrons as public posts are.

As an artist at minimum I post weekly, as I run a webcomic that updates once a week.

Usually it’s more than that however: if I have any art to share, which I usually make like 2-5 pieces a week, I’ll make a post for each pic. If I have done requests at all that week, those go up. If I have any work in progress on animation. And if I have source files that’s an additional post for that day.

And once a month I do a ā€˜general update’ post just to tell people what I’m working on.

Since I also do NSFW a good chunk of my photo posts are patron-only, but if anything’s SFW it’s publicly available. I also use early access for a lot of my posts.

I just wrote about this for my readers. I’ve seen a direct correlation between posts and pledges: The more I post, the more frequently I have a valid reason to talk about those posts on social media, and the more frequently I get new pledges.

Since 2016, my goal has been to post, on average, one post for every day in the month. I’ve been very happy with the results.

I have to wonder if that’s due to your posting frequency or to the NSFW contents

I have no doubt that the NSFW content is a significant driver of pledges.

Nonetheless, I’m a big believer in more posts = more pledges.

When my post frequency slows down, I lose backers. They’re looking at this like a subscription — not a tip jar. And when they feel as if they’re not getting what they’re paying for, they bounce.

That’s a good point. My backers are totally different and don’t seem to care whether I post or not :S

It certainly varies, but i post quite often. Sometimes there is just too many things to post and i have to do multiple in a day. (Specially at the beginning of the month when i post polls for my patrons to vote on what content they would like to see, what resources they’d like me to create, etc.) So far I’ve not had anyone actually complain about ā€œtoo many postsā€ though i do my best to spread things out but still keep my patrons engaged. I think its really dependent on your content and your supporters but you can always ask them! I’ve found that asking them how they feel about X Y Z, what they want to see more of, etc, really helps bring you closer to your patrons and really create a happy environment on your project.

great thread

I post just 3 times a month, my project it’s about free animation workshops and patrons support me each time I dictate a workshop, the dynamic of this it’s that I do a video for each workshop I dictate and that videos are the payed content I post. My number of patrons it’s constant so I have stability, but I’m looking for strategies to increase it because it’s a precarious stability.

It varies for me. I only post when I have new content for my patrons or an important update. Day-to-day talking usually happens in my patreon discord channel instead

I post a video or live stream once a week, and every couple days is a poll, WIP, model shots, or anything else I want to announce. I post as much as I can, and if I have the time I post every day.
Patrons don’t interact that much, and I have a solid base of people that interact and comment frequently. But, for the most part, my Patrons just want to see videos, and other tutorial stuff.

Posting more than once a day is excessive, and not something I would ever consider.

I post as much as I promised (depending on the pledge, a monthly car step by step, a weekly comic page, weekly cartoon, all the news…) and a little bit more, so patrons get more than they payed for. I guess they appreciate, but I don’t know for sure!
I also try to post something free every five or six posts, for curious people wanting to guess what’s behind the ā€œpatron onlyā€ posts.
It is difficult for me to reach new patrons, but I can say that once the come, they stay!

I was just about to start a topic to ask this question when this one showed up as a 'similar topic. I’ve recently started doing a weekly update post at the end of the week to share news about all work-in-progress projects, other news, and, sometimes just what weirdness life threw at me that week to interfere with project plans. It guarantees that I’ll at least make one post a week, but I’ve been trying to aim for 3-5 posts. I’ve also been struggling to decided how much is too much or even if there is such a thing. I don’t want to possibly annoy anyone by flooding their inboxes with loads of notices of new posts, but, then again, they did decide to follow or support and get those post notices.

So what do you think? Is there such a thing as too many posts per week or per day?

Only you can know what’s too much for your patrons, but you might poll them if you’re not sure. I suspect multiple posts a day would be too much for most content and will probably cause unrealistic expectations from patrons in the future and possible burnout for the creator. It seems as though it would cheapen the content if you’re churning it out and flooding people’s inboxes. I followed an artist once who made beautiful artworks, but because he’d streamlined his technique so he could make multiple paintings a day, it started seeming mechanical and contrived and mass-produced like on an assembly line. I stopped following him because it was too much.
That said, sometimes we do go through really productive periods and things flow easily and quickly. I’d use any extra content during those times as a buffer and schedule posts at a rate that felt comfortable to me and didn’t inundate patrons. Then if you are producing faster than you’re uploading, you can take a couple of weeks off and not have to apologize as there will still be a stream of content being released.
As for me, my patrons know I’m not at a point where I am a full-time artist and that I have a full-time job and a life outside of both. I make sure I have at the very least one artwork a month (which is usually 2 in progress posts and 1 final work) so they know I haven’t abandoned my Patreon or given up creating. Since July I’ve been determined to have at least one post per week and next year the goal is two per week, working up to three a week. Any more than that and it seems like too much to me, unless someone is doing a monthly challenge that they’re creating something for every day. I wouldn’t expect a creator to do that every month though.

Thanks for your thoughts @Lochy! Yeah, I was leaning towards trying not to post more than once a day. I have on occasion done that, but it’s usually no more than twice, one public and one patron-only. So probably best to stick with my original plan of 3-5 posts a week for now. I don’t have a large following on Patreon yet so I’m still testing waters to see what works best. My page is actually a combination of all three of my creative pursuits (jewellery design, digital illustration/concept art, and fiction writing) and I try to post about each every week whenever possible.

I might be an outlier here, but I post a LOT. Five or six short stories (depending on the week) one poll ever week, one poll every other week, one sneak peek (for a higher tier) and one chapter of a novel every week.

So far, my patrons love it, and are always excited for polls, stories, and chapters. I get a ton of interaction as comments, and the polls seem to hit almost full tier capacity no matter what the story options are for the week.

Ultimately, content is king, and the more content I put out, the happier they are.

Interesting, so posting more is not, necessarily, a bad thing. Definitely seems to vary depending on what type(s) of work you’re producing. Unfortunately, I don’t have a large enough following yet on Patreon to poll them and get a better idea of which way works best for me (only 1 patron so far and 2 followers). So, I guess, just keep posting right now based on what I’m best able to keep up with it, and reevaluate it later as my following/patronage numbers increase.

I post every weekend about 3-5+ posts over Friday - Sunday and a bonus on Monday depending on what I’m working on and if I didn’t reach my writing target or I’m feeling generous. I only do info/housekeeping posts throughout the week if I have any.

Planning to post thrice a week now that this has become my main job.
