So far most of the new features look good. I (and most of the people I know on Facebook who have a Patreon account) are not impressed with the new logo. Personally I think it looks puerile, but I’m not a graphic designer. A ball and stick is just… well, unimpressive. I, for one, will be sticking with the old logo for as long as possible.
Thanks for that link. I totally missed that the branding had changed. Have much to update now…
Very happy about Early Access - will definitely be getting some use out of that for our upcoming Patron Podcast. Also interested in Lens, as adding behind the scenes moments and livestreams is something we’re thinking about moving forward. However, having looked at Crowdcast’s pricing, have to say it was NOT appealing. Not looking to blow $50+ a month when there are a dozen decent mobile livestreaming apps available for free. Just my take.
I’m going to miss is too I kind of want to keep using it for a couple of things but if it has to go then it’s got to go…
Maybe you can use both logos until fans get used to the new one and you can phase out the old one? Kind of like how The Rock slowly morphed into Dwayne The Rock Johnson, and then just Dwayne Johnson? I might do that for new videos and promo
@MandyRosko i’ll be sticking with the old one, I really cant afford to change my booths signage that often. more or less funded in part by my patrons (who are disappointed with this change.) Good signs are expensive to make and i put so much effort into those.
@ellie My patrons are also very concerned and dissapointed with this turn of events.
A couple have said I should ask for reimbursement on my signs. (I wont…but in a way this has cost them too! Cards are expensive to order: so I can understand their ire.)
Some warning here on the community forms (IE: where the entire world cant see it.) – On such a big change really would have been appreciated: would have been nice if you asked those that are “in the loop for community feedback” on this first!!!
When literally thousands of people rely on a brand logo, its a bad move to change it up drastically for whatever small reason. – ( 99 designs? I really dont care or know what happened there, and from a business perspective neither should Patreon: you guys had something good: a logo that stood for your service for 4 long years: After those four years it was /just/ starting to be recognizable to the general public. (speaking as someone who sells at events reguarly) – Consider what that your logo had come to represent: Not its origins. – If theres controversy at 99 designs; then maybe have someone else re-design the same logo, but at least keep it within the recognizable shape? - As a graphic designer – this was a bad move: Even pepsi only changed their squiggle a little bit. (it was still the same circle shape with the same colors) You dont ever see Apple, Disney, Nintendo, or Kickstarter completely changing things up with their general logos either.
Really hoping that this is just a “phaze” that Patreon will listen, and either change back or redesign it further; to be a little bit more closer in shape to the older one, the new logo is so drastically different, that it does not communicate “Patreon” – As one of my own patrons put it: "We’re trying to help crowd-fund a comic. – Not play ‘Pong.’
But yeah I digress, It’s not a matter of disliking the logo itself, as much as disliking this move over all. I know it will take time for the public to adjust, but forcing people to adjust over something minor like that, is a HUGE problem in of itself.
That said, I want to reiterate, I’m honestly not mad, as much as i am concerned. I’m still very happy with the service that is Patreon, and will continue using it and reccomending you to new artists; but I am /incredibly/ concerned about new patrons & people that where considering, joining now being confused if what they’re looking at, is the same service at all.
the logo is also meme-ing in a very ‘infamous’ way already.
seriously loving all the new changes!
That’s a good point if you already had the merch made. I had some business cards made up but they luckily didn’t have the logo on them, just the link, but since my thing is romance books, whenever they go into print I’ve been putting the logo on the backs of the print books with my link. There’s only two print books so far, with one I can change if needed since it’s still in production, but now that I’m hearing people are having trouble with the new logo, I don’t know if I should stick it out or not and keep using the old one in case Patreon changes their mind, or decides to use both, or use the new one for their customer service… I don’t don’t know, but I am glad I didn’t get the charms made at this point. I was going to order 50 charms with the Patreon logo and slowly hand them out to Patrons in a mailed tier as a thank you, and again, I might possibly do this with both logos, one charm for each and people can decide which ones they get.
I was also going to order a banner. Not sure what to do about that, and the book signing I’m heading to is only a month and a half away. If I make the wrong choice then it will be immediately out of date, but that’s a situation where I can possibly use both logos if I get it designed right
As for people saying the patron logo looked too much like the Pinterest one, I don’t know, I never had that problem. If it’s because they’re both Ps then that’s something that can’t be helped at all, otherwise the Pinterest logo looks nothing like the old Patreon one.
Maybe Patreon can do a slow phase out if they’re that into changing the logo, like using both for a time, and then only using their new one. I think the thing that’s throwing us all off is that this happened immediately. I like the animation, but the new P is going to take a lot of getting used to
@ellie What was the brand that no longer represents you? I thought it was always creators getting paid from their fans? What changed from that?
So glad to hear I’m not the only one who thought the new logo reminded them of Pong. I thought if I mentioned it I would age myself and no one would get the reference. I was disappointed to not be able to get all of my promo graphics done for the last show I did, but now that I see it’s changed and realized what a lost expense this would have been, I’m kind of glad. I feel terrible for those who have invested money in putting the old logo on their business cards and graphics. I can see how financially troubling that must be. I’m trying to keep an open mind about the new logo, but it just hasn’t grabbed me yet and I feel like people were just starting to recognize the old logo and it was a mental link to what Patreon is.
Everything else is fantastic! I’m really excited about the new integrated livestreaming, though I am a little concerned about streaming in the unsearchable bubble, unless there is some feature that allows for people to search through what is currently streaming. Fingers crossed that future updates will include increased browsing: I would really like for Patreon to be more of a social media experience that encourages and supports surfing. (I still really want to know the number of people following too.)
Hi @ellie is there any hope of having an Early Release option where it goes from one reward level to another instead of just going public after a number of days?
Thanks for it all! I do miss the old P!
Seth
Another question: can I post a thread onto my own Community page? @ellie? Seems like now I can’t.
This is a good idea I would love to have this
Also, I can’t seem to change the days until it goes public. Am I missing something?
You have to set it as a patron only post and then an option to set early access will appear. It shows up for me right above the patron only dropdown menu. You check “set early access” and then input the number of days.
I see that, but I can’t change the number of days. At least not in Safari.
Edited: I can change the days in Chrome. Still not Safari.
Has there been a change in who is paying the processing fee now? I saw posted on FB that the processing fee has gone from being paid by creators to now paid by the patrons. Is this true? I have gotten no email indication that this has changed yet. If it is something that has happened I would hope Patreon would send out an email explanation to patrons, otherwise I feel I should do so before they are charged next month.
I can see how this would be beneficial to creators: If a creator has 1000 (or however many patrons) that means the creator has 1000 fees. If patrons cover this cost, that means more of the actual pledge is going to the creator.
I can see how this would be detrimental to patrons: If a patron is supporting 1000 creators (or any amount really) and then gets 1000 fees added to their charge with no warning that could make the patron distrustful of Patreon and artists in general.
Can someone from Patreon verify this?
I haven’t heard of this change, but as far as I know you have ONE fee no matter how many patrons you have. It’s a processing fee for the ONE amount you are receiving, not for each separate pledge. This isn’t Etsy! It’s explained here: https://patreon.zendesk.com/hc/en-us/articles/204606125-How-do-you-calculate-fees-
You’re right. I was unclear. I didn’t mean you would have lots of little fees, but they would be combined. It is a percentage, but it would still be affected by number of patrons.
If you have many patrons with small pledges, then processing fees will be a larger percentage of your overall earnings. If you have just a few large patrons, then processing fees will be a smaller percentage of your overall earnings.
I have mostly small pledge patrons. Let’s say I had 100 $1 patrons, I’d be paying more in processing fees than if I had 1 $100 patron. Same amount of $$ coming in, but the processing fees are higher in the first instance.
What I meant was that it would be beneficial to creators to not have to pay those fees (like a 3-4.5% raise), but if they are suddenly transferred to the patron without any warning, it could put them off Patreon and/or whatever artist(s) they support if they are not given fair warning. I want to know if my patrons are about to be charged a processing fee they are not expecting to pay and if Patreon plans on sending out any information about the change. If not, I will let them know myself.
This is really great, and I cannot wait to get some of these features.
One simple feature I wish was possible, is the ability to post multiple images in one image posting. Sometimes I want to tell a story, or talk about a specific aspect and show gradual images, or events as I describe them, and have it appear nicely like a blog.
Currently I have to just find one image, or, just attach a bunch, and I don’t like how that looks visually.
