I love taking time to go to the movies and I think it’s because of what you mentioned, a forced time out!

Also, love this: ā€œAs for advice, either design your Patreon to be sustainable for the long haul, or leave a lot of room for change.ā€ such great advice, thank you for sharing!!

Like many of the others, I don’t think there’s such a thing as balance. We’re at a transition period between the old, established media which still dominates and casts a long shadow over everything we’re trying to do, and the new media reality. But many of them run on unsustainable business models and they’ll eventually need to shut down.

Until then, all we can do is work as hard as we can to build up as much of a following as we can. That means long hours, and going above and beyond to deliver content and experiences to our patrons.

The internet has removed the need for gatekeepers. We don’t need to wait to be ā€œpickedā€. But that also means we’re competing with 7.5 billion people to reach an audience.

So, I’m working all the time. But then, I love what I do, so it doesn’t really feel like work.

I’ve been seeing a common theme here of balance just not being realistic. I’m so glad you mentioned that since you love what you do, it doesn’t feel like work. I think a lot of creators (including myself) feel the same. Thanks so much for sharing!

Thank you to everyone who gave us quotes for our work-life balance series! We ended up writing THREE articles that give creators advice whether they’re working full-time, part-time, or pursuing their creative endeavors as a side hustle! Here’s a post that links to all the articles:

Check it out and thanks for sharing your stories with us!

I belive before finding balance as a creator on Patreon, you need to find balance in life…
I know way too many people who don’t know how to organize their time and they’re always like: I don’t have time for anything! And I’m like: oh kid… if I had your time I would do so many things with it…and I cry
Then I analize what they do and… they actually DO have time, but they don’t know how to organize it. It’s a lot of wasted time.

There was a time when I had: full time job (programmer), artist (doing lots of commissions), univeristy (partial time), house chores (I live with boyfriend, we bought a big house so chores are endless around the house) and as a plus: you must visit family, you must have social life, go to conventions with a stand, take the dog to the park, you must have time for self care, boyfriend wants to watch movies because he bored… and a lot more.

How to do everything? Good question. For me I didn’t even have to think about it. It just comes naturally… use google calendar, write down all the ā€œmust doā€ stuff and I guess the most important: don’t be lazy… Think what is the most important, priorities. It might cost a fight, or a sacrifice, maybe you can’t play videogames every day. Maybe you must cut off some family visiting or hanging out with friends so much. Are you willing to reduce time for other less important stuff?

I don’t know, but I guess it’s all a matter of priorities. It’s like when my father said: you don’t have time for taking care of a dog. And I told him: I will MAKE time.

Because if you really want something, you make time for it and of course, reduce it from something else. You just need to sit and think what do you want to do with your life and stay focus on your priorities.

Anyhow, I’m not successful artist anyway, but it’s for different reason. I started being a serious freelance artist 3 months ago so I’m still in the ā€œgetting noticedā€ phase. I started Patreon 6 months ago I think, when I still had a full time job over my shoulders, and college… I decided to leave my job (did it in june) to give this a try, becoming an artist, my childhood dream.

But yes, time management is first thing to think about.

Thanks so much Roxy, I completely agree with this:
